First Forest School Walk: Exploring Nature with Emily

We’re thrilled to share an exciting milestone from our Ash Vale Nursery—our very first forest school walk has taken place! This new initiative, led by our wonderful school leader Emily, marks the beginning of a fantastic outdoor learning journey for our children. With plans to explore the woods twice a week, we can’t wait to see the positive impact this will have on our little learners.

Embracing the Forest School Approach

The forest school model is all about encouraging children to connect with nature, explore their environment, and learn through hands-on, child-led experiences. By heading out into the woods on a regular basis, children develop a deeper appreciation for the natural world while building key skills in a relaxed, open-air setting.

Our first walk was filled with excitement and wonder. From spotting birds and collecting leaves to splashing in puddles and navigating tree roots, the children fully embraced the magic of the outdoors. Forest school days are all about curiosity, confidence, and creativity—and we’re so proud of how our Ash Vale children stepped into this new adventure.

The Benefits of Outdoor Exploration

Spending time outdoors provides a wide range of developmental benefits for children. Here are just a few of the reasons we’re so passionate about our forest school walks:

  • Physical Development: Walking, climbing, balancing, and running in the woods all help children build coordination, strength, and gross motor skills.

  • Social Skills: Working together to explore, build, and play encourages cooperation, communication, and teamwork.

  • Emotional Well-being: Nature has a calming effect on children, helping to reduce stress and boost their mood and self-esteem.

  • Cognitive Growth: Forest school promotes problem-solving, critical thinking, and curiosity-driven learning in a rich, sensory environment.

  • Connection to Nature: Children gain a deeper understanding of the seasons, plants, animals, and ecosystems, which supports the EYFS area of "Understanding the World."

Led by Passion and Purpose

Emily, our forest school lead, brings passion and purpose to every outing. With her guidance, the children are learning how to be safe, respectful, and adventurous in nature. Whether they’re following a trail, spotting wildlife, or simply lying in the grass to watch the clouds, Emily ensures each experience is meaningful and rooted in the EYFS principles.

Looking Ahead

With forest school walks planned twice a week, we’re excited to see how this outdoor learning experience continues to evolve. We’re confident it will become one of the children’s favourite parts of the week—and one they’ll remember for years to come.

If you’re a parent at our Ash Vale nursery, be sure to ask your child about their adventures in the woods. And if you’re curious about joining the Pippas House family, we’d love to show you how we bring learning to life—indoors and out!
