As the leaves turn golden and conkers begin to fall, autumn brings a wonderful opportunity to celebrate nature and outdoor play. At Pippa’s House Nursery, we love this time of year; it’s perfect for exploring the great outdoors, noticing seasonal changes, and giving children meaningful, hands-on learning experiences that nurture both mind and body.

Outdoor learning is an essential part of the Early Years Foundation Stage (EYFS), helping children build confidence, develop coordination, and connect with the world around them. Autumn’s crisp air, rustling leaves, and muddy puddles offer the perfect sensory playground for little explorers.
Why Outdoor Play Matters
When children play outdoors, they’re not just having fun; they’re learning vital life skills. Activities like balancing on logs, collecting leaves, or splashing through puddles support physical development and coordination. At the same time, exploring the natural world sparks curiosity and helps children build an early understanding of science and the environment.
At Pippa’s House, we make the most of the season with Forest School sessions and outdoor adventures. Children might go on nature walks to collect pinecones and leaves for craft projects, plant bulbs in the garden, or enjoy storytelling under the trees. These experiences help build independence, confidence, and problem-solving skills, all while having fun in the fresh air.

The Benefits of Autumn Adventures
Physical Development: Outdoor play strengthens muscles and improves balance and coordination.
Language Growth: Talking about what they see and feel helps children expand their vocabulary and communication skills.
Emotional Wellbeing: Fresh air, open spaces, and connection to nature all support positive mental health.
Creativity: From leaf collages to mud kitchen creations, outdoor play encourages imagination and innovation.
At Pippa’s House, every season brings new opportunities for discovery, but autumn holds a special kind of magic. Whether it’s spotting squirrels, watching the leaves change colour, or jumping into piles of crunchy leaves, there’s so much joy to be found outdoors.
